Pursuant to the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (Qld) (ACHA), Danggan Balun are the Aboriginal Party for the area, and the registration of our claim grants us certain rights to protect and preserve our Cultural Heritage. The ACHA defines Aboriginal cultural heritage as anything that is—

circles.png

(a) a significant Aboriginal area in Queensland; or

(b) a significant Aboriginal object; or

(c) evidence, of archaeological or historic significance, of Aboriginal occupation of an area of Queensland.

The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act imposes a duty on all land users to take all reasonable and practicable measures to avoid harming Aboriginal cultural heritage. Failure to comply with this "cultural heritage duty of care" is one of several criminal offences created by the ACHA "cultural heritage protection provisions". Individuals and corporations risk criminal prosecution if they commit any of these offences, with conviction potentially resulting in fines and even imprisonment.

Working with developers across our claim area, we ensure our heritage and sacred places are being properly cared for. We strives to collaborate with businesses and government organisations in the interest of preserving cultural heritage, using our archaeological and historical knowledge to ensure that all tasks and background assessments are completed to a high standard.

greenbank pipeline

In June 2018, Five Rivers Aboriginal Party undertook an archaeological survey of a proposed wastewater pipeline in Logan.

Although no Aboriginal Cultural Heritage was identified during the survey, it was deemed highly likely that the Project Area would contain subsurface deposits.

Archaeological excavations were recommended and will be taking place in the near future.

Logan Water Infrastructure Alliance - Lake Road

In early 2018 the Five Rivers Aboriginal Party undertook archaeological test excavations for the proposed pipeline across Slacks Creek, Lake Road, Queensland.

Relatively low density scatters of artefacts were found during excavations. These artefacts were salvaged for later analysis. The Five Rivers People would like to thank the Logan Water Alliance for the opportunity to record our heritage before it was destroyed.
